Who?

We are interested in candidates who reflect the diverse communities in which we serve and operate, demonstrate a strong commitment to civic engagement and volunteer service, and possess interpersonal skills to support the strategic and mission-based governance of our 501(c)(3) organization.

Board members are the fiduciaries who steer the organization towards a sustainable future by adopting sound, ethical, and legal governance and financial management policies, as well as by making sure HandsOn has adequate resources to advance its mission.

what?

Extensive professional experience with significant leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector.

Substantial expertise and access to networks and communities, including but not limited to legal, financial, managerial, human resources, advocacy, private sector, and entrepreneurship.

Access to financial resources (foundations, corporations, individuals).

Ability to leverage relationships that support the organization’s strategic goals and objectives, including attracting other high-performing board members.

Demographics: Mid to senior level professionals; persons of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Willingness to serve on Board Committees: Development, Finance, or Governance.

When?

Board member terms are for three years, with a maximum of three consecutive terms. Monthly participation is 2-3 hours.

Attend monthly Board meetings (virtual and/or or in-person)

Attend monthly Development, Finance, or Governance subcommittee meetings (virtual/in-person)

Fundraise a minimum of $1,000 annually. So that HandsOn can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, HandsOn expects to have all of its Board members make HandsOn a philanthropic priority. Annual contributions may consist of any combination of personal giving, donor solicitation, corporate sponsorship, or program sponsorship.

Complete 25 service hours annually. All meetings and time spent between meetings working on HandsOn business count. To support the mission, the Board participates in two direct days of service Family Volunteer Day each November and MLK Day of Service and Remembrance in January.

Attend orientation. New board members will attend an orientation meeting and are expected to attend in person an annual Board Retreat.
