| One of our biggest challenges is communicating to the nation, that our city is both up and running again and yet still heavily devastated in many ways. The French Quarter, the business district and other popular New Orleans’ cultural assets are back; but just blocks away, neighborhoods are still struggling to rebuild.
Hurricane Katrina was the worst natural disaster in American history. Hundreds of thousands of homes remain to be rebuilt and nearly 200,000 people are still displaced. The need for recovery aid is significant, and will be for years to come.

Purchase a Commemorative Print!
HONO Volunteer, “D”, recently painted his 350 th mural in New Orleans. His art helps bring beauty to dilapidated landscapes and hope to residents who live constantly surrounded by Katrina’s destruction. In a further effort to support the recovery of New Orleans, D has created two commemorative prints. These prints are available for purchase, with half of the proceeds going to continue the work of Hands On New Orleans.

Poster-sized prints are available for $60, plus shipping.
To purchase your print, contact Hands On New Orleans Director, Kellie Bentz, at: KBentz@handsonneworleans.org

3) Looking for the perfect gift? Make a donation in someone’s name.
Out of holiday gift ideas? Make a donation in someone else’s name. We’ll post the recipient’s name on our website and send them a certificate and a Hands On New Orleans t-shirt in the mail.
4) Help fund a specific project. Current projects in need of funding include:
Evelyn Green’s House. Ms. Green is a widowed, 64 year old community organizer, whose historic, Victorian home is located in Central City. Katrina tore the roof off of her house. Vacant since Ms. Green’s evacuation, the building has suffered from continual weather damage. Ms. Green’s limited insurance settlement paid for a new roof, and Hands On New Orleans gutted the home in 2006. We began reconstruction in Aug. of 2007.
Ms. Evelyn’s home is filled with ornate, and historically rich architecture. As Hands On New Orleans and our partners struggle to make houses habitable again for their owners, we also become stewards of the historical character and quality of these building at a time when they are most vulnerable.
Hands On New Orleans hopes to rebuild Ms. Evelyn’s house, while holding true to its historical roots. Because the materials needed for this project are so specific in nature, we are asking mainly for monetary donations or gift cards in support of this project.
