Opportunities for Visiting Volunteers Back To Main

Volunteer and Stay with Hands On

Hands On New Orleans and Volunteers of America have collaborated to provide housing for volunteers to help in the Greater New Orleans area at an affordable cost. As volunteers continue to come to the Gulf Coast to help in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita our organizations have joined forces to provide a full Volunteer experience.

What You Receive

We ask that volunteers pay only $20 per day which allows Hands On New Orleans to provide three meals a day, (Breakfast: cold and / or hot cereal, bagels and toast; Lunch: pack a sandwich, bag of chips and fruit; Dinner: a hot meal will be served), transportation to and from project sites, internet access and the cost of tools and equipment for the projects. The cost also ensures sustainability for Hands On New Orleans and Volunteers of America housing site, as we plan to serve the community of New Orleans for many years to come.

When To Arrive

We ask that volunteers arrive on a Saturday between 1 pm and 5 pm and be prepared to depart the following Saturday by 11 am.

Location, Location

The housing facility is located in the Uptown area of New Orleans just one block away from Magazine Street which is well known for its six miles of restaurants, coffee shops, antiques, furniture, clothing, dining, gifts, jewelry and much more.

The Digs

Our facility is communal living, bathrooms, showers, and dining areas are shared. There is computer access and high-speed wireless is available for those who bring their laptops. All the volunteers sleep in bunk beds that are divided by gender and arranged dormitory style. As a community, we ask that our volunteers work together to maintain the facility by volunteering to assist in setting up breakfast, cooking evening dinners and helping to keep the facility clean.

The Scene

Every evening we have a community meeting which allows for our volunteers to share and report on their experience that day. This is also a time where volunteers find out about the following days projects and are given the opportunity to select their project for that day.
